Hewitt police officer injured after shootout with bank robbery suspect

HEWITT, Texas — A Hewitt police officer was shot Tuesday while chasing a bank robbery suspect, police said.

Officers were called around 9 a.m. to the Point West Bank in 400 block of North Hewitt Drive for a robbery. As the suspect was leaving the bank, he and an officer exchanged gunfire, police said. The officer was injured. His condition was not immediately known.

The suspect fled the scene in a vehicle and officers followed, police said.

The suspect got out of the car at Garden and Wyngate and ran, police said.

Officers searched the areas of Darden, Brewster, Meadowbrook, and Garden Drive before the suspect was caught just after 9:30 a.m. and taken into custody by Waco police, according to officials.
