ALABAMA SENATE RACE: Doug Jones Beats Roy Moore

TeeRoy's 2 Cents:

  • It appears the allegations sunk Moore's hopes for victory.
  • Jones got much of the African-American vote.
  • Moore played up his rebel/cowboy image right up to the end. He rode his horse to the polling place.

President Trump, who supported Roy Moore, tweeted "Congratulations to Doug Jones on a hard fought victory. The write-in votes played a very big factor, but a win is a win. The people of Alabama are great, and the Republicans will have another shot at this seat in a very short period of time. It never ends!

In a hotly contested and controversial battle, Democrat Doug Jones defeated Republican Roy Moore Tuesday night to win Alabama's election for a U.S. Senate seat, according to projections from multiple news outlets. Before the call was made at about 7:30 p.m. PT, the race was too close to call.

Though Alabama is a red state, Moore was dogged by accusations that he was engaged in inappropriate sexual relations with teenage girls when he was in his 30s. Moore, the former chief justice of the Alabama Supreme Court, repeatedly denied the allegations, but some Republicans shied away from supporting him. However, Donald Trump continued to push for Moore and his former adviser, Steve Bannon, spoke at one of Moore's final campaign stops prior to the election.

Jones is famous for prosecuting a pair of KKK members for the bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham in 1963. (FOX News)
